Find a verified Structural Engineer in Ireland
Structural calculations, beam specs, party wall reports, and certification for extensions and alterations.
What does a structural engineer do?
Structural engineers calculate the loads, sizes, and connections of structural elements — beams, columns, foundations, retaining walls, lintels — and certify they're adequate. For Irish homeowners, the most common engagements are knock-through projects (removing a load-bearing wall), extensions, loft conversions, basement digs, and structural defects (cracks, subsidence, bowing walls).
Most engineers are chartered through Engineers Ireland (CEng MIEI) or the equivalent in the UK (IStructE). For projects requiring formal certification — BCAR sign-off, mortgage purposes, sale to a careful solicitor — chartered status matters. For smaller calculations (single beam in a knock-through), a competent engineer may not be chartered but can still produce reliable calculations. Always ask for proof of professional indemnity insurance — engineers are exposed to long-tail liability and reputable ones carry it.

How much does a structural engineer cost in Ireland?
Indicative pricing — your actual quote will vary
Engineer pricing varies by scope. The figures below are indicative Irish ranges.
A single beam calculation for a knock-through (RSJ above an opening, drawings, calcs, certification) typically runs €450–€900. A full structural design for a 3-bed semi extension is €1,500–€3,500. Loft conversion structural design is €1,200–€2,800. Foundation design for a new build is €2,500–€6,500. Pre-purchase property inspection (visual structural survey with report) is €450–€900. Site supervision visits during construction are typically €280–€450 per visit. Subsidence diagnosis with monitoring report is €800–€2,200.
These are indicative ranges based on typical Irish jobs. Final pricing depends on scope, materials, urgency, and the trader you choose. On Jobiit you'll receive itemised quotes (labour, materials, VAT) so there are no surprises.

Structural Engineer FAQs
When do I need a structural engineer?
Anytime structure is being altered: removing a load-bearing wall (any wall supporting joists or roof above), adding an opening for a door or window in a load-bearing wall, building an extension (foundation and structural design), converting a loft (floor strengthening, roof modification), or where structural concerns exist (cracks, leaning walls, subsidence). Building control requires engineer's certification on most structural work — your builder or architect will tell you when one is needed.
Engineer vs architect — what's the difference?
Architect: designs the building — what it looks like, how the spaces work, material choices. Engineer: calculates whether the building will stand up — beam sizes, foundation depths, lateral stability. They work together: architect specifies a knock-through; engineer sizes the beam. On larger projects you need both. On smaller jobs (a single beam calculation), an engineer alone is enough — you don't need an architect for a non-design task.
How long does engineer work take?
Single beam calc: 1–2 weeks turnaround, including site visit. Extension structural design: 2–4 weeks. Subsidence assessment with monitoring: 2–6 months for monitoring period plus reporting. Most engineers are booking 2–4 weeks ahead for new work — book early on time-critical projects.
Are cracks always serious?
Most aren't. Hairline cracks (under 1mm) on internal plaster — drying shrinkage or thermal movement, harmless. Stepped cracks through brickwork following mortar joints — usually settlement, monitor over 6–12 months. Diagonal cracks wider than 5mm, cracks that grow visibly, cracks accompanied by sticking doors/windows — these need engineer's assessment within weeks. Subsidence (movement of the foundation) is the worst case; most cracks are not subsidence. €450–€900 buys peace of mind one way or the other.
Do I need an engineer if I'm using a builder?
For most structural work, yes — even if your builder is competent. Building Control regulations require certified calculations for load-bearing changes. Your insurance and any future sale will look for engineer's certification on knock-throughs and extensions. Some builders include the engineer's fee in their quote; others ask you to engage one separately. Either way, it's needed work, not a luxury — never skip it on load-bearing changes.
