Find a verified Painting & Decorator in Ireland

Interior repaints, exterior facades, woodwork, wallpaper, and damp-proof finishes by professional decorators.

What does a painting & decorator do?

Painters and decorators prepare and finish interior and exterior surfaces — walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors, window frames, and exterior render. The work splits into preparation (filling, sanding, masking, priming) and application (cutting in, rolling, brushing, spraying). Good prep is what separates a professional finish from a DIY job — taking time on filler, sanding, and primer means topcoats lay flat without lap marks, sheens are uniform, and the finish lasts.

Most Irish residential painting is interior repaint work: a single room, full ground floor, or whole house freshen-up. Exterior work tends to be every 8–10 years for traditional render, more often for wood. A typical interior pro uses water-based emulsion on walls/ceilings and water-based satinwood on woodwork — modern water-based formulations now perform as well as old oil-based eggshell with no smell and faster drying. Some clients still prefer oil-based on woodwork for the harder finish.

How much does a painting & decorator cost in Ireland?

Indicative pricing — your actual quote will vary

Painting prices vary by room size, prep needed, and finish quality. The figures below cover labour and standard mid-range paint.

A single bedroom (around 12m² floor area) repainted — walls, ceiling, woodwork — typically runs €350–€600 fully prepped. A reception room or main bedroom is €450–€800. A full ground floor repaint (3 rooms plus hall) runs €1,800–€3,500. A 3-bed semi whole-house interior is €4,000–€7,500 in labour and materials. Exterior render painting on a 3-bed semi is €2,000–€3,500 (scaffolding extra). Wallpaper hanging is €30–€55 per roll plus paste and prep.

These are indicative ranges based on typical Irish jobs. Final pricing depends on scope, materials, urgency, and the trader you choose. On Jobiit you'll receive itemised quotes (labour, materials, VAT) so there are no surprises.

Painting & Decorator FAQs

How much prep do I need before paint?

More than most people think. A good painter spends 30–50% of total job time on prep: filling cracks and screw-holes, sanding repaired areas flat, dusting down, masking, priming bare patches. Skipping prep is the main reason cheap quotes look bad after 6 months. When evaluating quotes, ask specifically about prep — number of fills, number of sands, primer use. The number of paint coats is less important than the quality of what's underneath.

How many coats of paint do I need?

On previously painted walls in similar colour: 2 coats of emulsion is usually sufficient. Going from a dark colour to a lighter colour: 3 coats minimum, often 4. New plaster needs a mist coat (watered-down emulsion) followed by 2 topcoats. Woodwork: 1 primer + 2 topcoats on bare timber, or 2 topcoats over previously painted woodwork in good condition.

Water-based or oil-based paint?

Water-based has dominated since modern formulations (Crown Easyclean, Dulux Quick Dry, Farrow & Ball Dead Flat) deliver wash-ability and durability comparable to oil. Water-based dries faster (recoat in 4–6 hours), has no smell, doesn't yellow over time, and cleans up with water. Oil-based gives a harder, glossier finish on woodwork some still prefer, but takes 16–24 hours between coats and yellows over a year or two. Most Irish painters now default to water-based for everything except specialist jobs.

Can I live in the house while it's being painted?

Yes for room-by-room work. Modern water-based paints have minimal smell and dry quickly enough to use the same evening. For full-house repaints with multiple rooms going at once, plan for 1–2 dust-heavy days during sanding when staying elsewhere is more pleasant. Pets can stay if rooms are sealed off; small kids are easiest out of the way during sanding.

How often should exterior paint be redone?

Render: every 8–12 years for masonry paint, sooner if conditions are exposed. Wood (windows, doors, fascias): every 5–8 years. Metal (railings, gates): 5–10 years. Front doors in regular use show wear in 3–5 years and benefit from a touch-up. Top tip: budget for early intervention on south-facing or weather-exposed walls — UV and rain accelerate degradation.
