What does a plasterer do?

Wall and ceiling skim coats, repair patches, dry-lining, and full re-plaster by vetted, insured plasterers. Smooth finish ready for paint.

Plasterers apply finishes to walls and ceilings — internal plasterboard skim, hard plaster onto blockwork, render onto exterior walls, repair patches, and decorative cornicing. Plastering and skimming work splits broadly into three skills: skimming (a smooth, thin plaster finish ready for paint), float-and-set (a full plaster system on bare blockwork), and rendering (an exterior masonry finish). Each requires different mixes, tools, and techniques, so it pays to describe your job clearly when you post it — a skim over sound plasterboard is a very different scope to hacking off and replastering a damp wall.

Most Irish domestic plastering is internal: a skim coat over old textured ceilings, repair patches after electrical or plumbing work, a full skim of a new-build extension, or replastering after damp remediation. Exterior render is typically only redone when extensive cracking, blow-out, or damp ingress requires intervention. A skilled plasterer leaves walls flat and ceilings without high spots; a rushed job leaves shadows that catch every wall light. The quality of the finish coat is what matters most for paint to lay nicely — so before hiring, insist on an itemised quote that spells out prep, number of coats, and drying times, and check your plasterer is insured for work in your home.

How much does a plasterer cost in Ireland?

Indicative pricing — your actual quote will vary

Plastering pricing varies by area, finish, and prep. The biggest cost drivers are the state of the existing surface (a skim over sound plasterboard is far quicker than hacking off blown plaster first), ceiling height and access, and whether furniture and floors need protecting. The figures below are indicative Irish ranges per square metre or per area — your itemised quote will reflect the specifics of your job.

Internal skim coat over existing plasterboard or sound plaster runs €18–€32 per m². Float-and-set on bare blockwork is €35–€55 per m². Ceiling skim (typical 12m² room) is €280–€450 per ceiling. Patch repairs are typically €120–€250 per patch depending on size. External render of a 3-bed semi exterior runs €4,000–€8,500 (scaffolding extra). Decorative cornice repair is €40–€80 per linear metre depending on profile complexity. Damp-related replastering after damp-proofing is €40–€60 per m² (specialist mix). Small jobs often carry a minimum charge, so bundling patch repairs into one visit is usually better value than booking them separately.

These are indicative ranges based on typical Irish jobs. Final pricing depends on scope, materials, and urgency. On Jobiit your matched trader sends one fully itemised quote (labour, materials, VAT) so there are no surprises.

Plasterer FAQs

How long does fresh plaster need before painting?

Skim coat: 7–14 days to fully dry depending on conditions (humidity, ventilation, ambient temperature). The plaster goes from dark pink/grey through pale pink to even white-pink as it dries. Don't paint while still patchy in colour — moisture will affect paint adhesion. Apply a mist coat (watered-down emulsion) as the first coat, then 2 normal topcoats. Full plaster systems (float-and-set on blockwork) need 3–4 weeks before painting.

Can I plaster over wallpaper?

No — never. Wallpaper paste fails when wet plaster is applied over it, the plaster will detach, and you'll end up tearing it all off and starting over. Strip wallpaper completely before any plastering work. If the underlying surface is sound after stripping, a skim coat fixes any remaining glue residue or torn paper. If walls are badly damaged after stripping, a full re-plaster may be needed.

What causes hairline cracks in new plaster?

Common causes: drying too fast (open windows, hot weather, central heating cranking up immediately), structural settlement on new builds (normal for the first year), or inadequate preparation. Hairline cracks under 1mm are normal and fill with paint. Wider cracks (2mm+) or cracks that grow over time indicate structural movement and need investigation by a structural engineer rather than just refilling.

Should I replace damaged plaster or skim over it?

Skim over it if: cracks are hairline, the underlying plaster is sound when you press it, and there's no damp. Replace it if: plaster is hollow (sounds drum-like when tapped), there's visible damp staining, or the plaster has 'blown' (you can push it inward). Plaster cover-ups over fundamentally bad surfaces fail within a year, so don't skip the prep diagnosis.

Is artex / textured ceiling removal worth doing?

Yes for most homeowners. Textured (stippled, popcorn) ceilings date a room and trap dust. Removal is messy but transforms a room. Two methods: scraping wet (cheaper, around €15–€25 per m² total) or skimming over (more expensive, €25–€40 per m² total but smoother result). Note: artex applied before 2000 may contain asbestos — get tested before disturbing. Asbestos-containing artex needs licensed removal.

Will my plastering job be passed around to lots of plasterers?

No. Jobiit matches your job to one vetted local plasterer — the closest, best-rated trader available — not a call list. We don't run a bidding marketplace where dozens of businesses compete for your details, and all messaging happens in the app. Every plasterer on Jobiit is ID-verified through Stripe Identity and holds valid public liability insurance, and posting your job is completely free.

Your questions, answered

New to Jobiit? Here's how hiring through the platform works.

Is it free to post a job and get a quote?

Yes — Jobiit is 100% free for homeowners. Posting a job costs nothing, and there are no booking fees, service charges, or subscriptions. You only ever pay the price on your trader's itemised quote. Traders pay a small platform fee on completed jobs — never you.

Are the traders vetted, insured, and qualified?

Every trader passes a government-ID check (via Stripe Identity) and holds valid public liability insurance before they can take jobs on Jobiit. Trade-specific registrations — like RGI for gas work and Safe Electric for electrical — are validated, and we monitor insurance expiry automatically.

How fast will I hear back?

Most homeowners receive their free, itemised quote within a few hours of posting. Your job is matched to one available local trader — so you get a real quote quickly, not a queue of callbacks to sit through.

Will my phone number get passed around?

No. Jobiit isn't a lead-selling site — we don't hand your details to a list of businesses that then compete to call you. Your job is matched to one vetted trader, and messaging happens in the app, so you stay in control of the conversation.

Need a plasterer? Post your job in 60 seconds.
